| Sign on: Roma Security in Europe Needs Concrete Action We invite your organisation to sign a letter to the European Commission asking it to include the security of Roma in two major upcoming decisions: the new European Security Strategy announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU’s next long-term budget (2028–2034). Why this letter? In June 2025, the Global Roma Alliance for Strategic Security (GRASS), a network of Roma organisations, parties and activists wrote to the Commission warning about growing threats against Roma. In September 2025, the Commission replied in writing that ”the security of the European Roma is a priority concern.” One year later, we are asking what has followed from this statement. The main points of the letter: • A policy gap. The EU’s new Anti-Racism Strategy recognises antigypsyism, but includes no budget or monitoring for Roma security. The EU’s new security agenda (ProtectEU) does not mention Roma at all. • Threats documented across Europe. These include large-scale police operations in Roma neighbourhoods in Greece, threats against Roma activists and data-driven profiling in Germany, open calls for deportation in public debate in Denmark, a firebomb attack on a sleeping Roma family in Hungary, and neo-Nazi networks and forced demolitions in Bulgaria. • Lost trust in the authorities. According to the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, the share of Roma who report discrimination fell from 16% to 6% between 2016 and 2024. This signals a loss of faith in the authorities, not less discrimination. • No dedicated funding. We could not find any EU security funding earmarked for protecting Roma from violence. • Clear demands. The letter asks the Commission who is responsible, what funds exist, and how Roma activists and organisations can safely report threats. It asks for a dedicated budget line in the next financial framework. Read the whole letter here.
