From 29 October to 1 November, the Council of Europe’s Roma and Travellers Division and the OSCE/ODIHR Contact Point on Roma and Sinti Issues, in cooperation with the Czech authorities, organised a training of trainers course based on the joint training curriculum for Member Statesto improve policy responses to the situation of Roma, Sinti and Traveller communities and to combat prejudice, negative stereotyping and discrimination by law enforcement agencies.
The training brought together police officers from different departments across the country who work with minorities, including Roma communities.
The joint training aims to strengthen the capacity of police officers working with Roma, Sinti and Traveller communities by:
- providing effective policing strategies that are fair and responsive to the needs of the communities they serve, while using practices that comply with human rights standards;
- by educating participants on European standards of non-discrimination, the findings and recommendations of human rights monitoring bodies, and the principles and standards derived from the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights on the prevention and investigation of racist crimes; and
- by increasing participants’ knowledge of and sensitivity to gender issues faced by Roma, Sinti and Traveller women.
Any Council of Europe member State or OSCE participating State and OSCE field operation may request assistance from the Council of Europe and the ODIHR in improving the policing of Roma, Sinti and Traveller communities through this joint training programme.
