On 8 April, the Council of Europe marked International Roma Day with a vibrant programme honouring Roma history, resilience, and cultural heritage. For the first time ever, the Roma flag was flown from the flagpole in front of the Agora building. The celebratory events, held at the European Youth Centre (EYC) and the Passerelle de l’Aubépine in Strasbourg, brought together permanent representations, observers, staff members, Roma communities, and young activists.
A Ceremony that highlights unity, resilience and identity of Roma communities across Europe
From 13:00 to 13:45, participants gathered for an official ceremony celebrating unity and cultural heritage and highlighting the ongoing contributions of Roma communities across Europe. The event opened with reflections on the significance of International Roma Day, now more than five decades after the first World Romani Congress established 8 April as a global occasion for recognition and solidarity.
The ceremony featured a moving performance of the Romani anthem Gelem Gelem, followed by interventions from Marja Ruotanen, Director of the Council of Europe Directorate General of Democracy and Human Dignity, Georgios Stamatis, Parliamentary Assembly General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, and member of the Advisory Council on Youth, Stelina Dungaj, who spoke about the aspirations of young Roma and their role in advocating for inclusive democratic societies.
A symbolic flower‑casting moment from the Passerelle de l’Aubépine concluded the ceremony, accompanied by musical interlude.
The 6th edition of Roma Youth Together seminar kicks off
Earlier that day, the Council of Europe launched the 6th edition of the Roma Youth Together seminar, together with the Youth Department, European Roma Institute for Arts and Cultyre (ERIAC), European Roma Grassroots Society Network (ERGO), International Roma Youth Network – ternYpe, and Phiren Amenca. This year’s programme brings together more than 30 young Roma youngsters from 17 countries to exchange on celebration, pride and contribution of youth leadership in building more inclusive societies. Participants will engage with experts, share experiences, and strengthen networks that support Roma youth initiatives at national and European levels.
“Opre Roma!” Month – Celebrating Roma history, language and culture
International Roma Day, observed each year on 8 April, commemorates the historic 1971 World Romani Congress and serves as a reminder of the continued struggle against discrimination faced by Roma communities. The 2026 observance, marking 55 years since that first congress, reaffirms both the diversity and the resilience of Europe’s largest ethnic minority.
The Council of Europe’s events form part of Opre Roma! Month, a broader framework of initiatives celebrating Roma history, language, and culture across member states and partner organisations. Through these events, the Council of Europe reiterates its commitment to promoting equality, human dignity, and the full recognition of Roma contributions to Europe’s cultural and social fabric.
