
As part of the Council of Europe’s Opre Roma! month, dedicated to Roma history, language, and culture, Romáland was performed at the Maillon Theatre in Strasbourg from 2 to 4 April, with the premiere being held on 2 April. The storytelling of Roma from Greece was made possible under the collaboration between the Council of Europe, Onassis Foundation and Maillon Theatre.
The premiere, attended by the permanent representations in Strasbourg, Deputy mayors of Strasbourg, the judges and the registrar from the European Court of Human Rights, members of the Committee of Experts on Roma and Traveller Issues (ADI-ROM), the representatives of the Council of Europe Dialogue with Roma and Traveller Civil Society Organisations, Council of Europe staff members, school pupils, local associations, and the general public, provided an opportunity to connect with the experiences of the Roma through arts. Remarks by the Floriane Varieras, Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg in charge of Inclusive Cities, Solidarity, Support for Vulnerable People and the Fight against Discrimination, Barbara Engelhardt, Director of the Maillon Theatre, and Hallvard Gorseth, Head of the Anti-discrimination Department, underlined the significance of the event and the broader importance of Opre Roma! month in promoting Roma,history, language and culture.
Romáland, directed by Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris, offers a powerful portrayal of the Roma community’s status in society, addressing themes of exclusion, stigmatisation, and cultural resilience. Through its storytelling, the performance relays the voice of the Roma community, inviting the audience to reflect on their ongoing struggles and contribution to the European societies. The event highlighted the significance ofOpre Roma! month, a time to reflect on the history, language and culture, and ongoing struggles of the Roma community.
