The Coalition was initiated in the frame of the EC/CoE Joint Project on Roma Holocaust Remembrance and Education (“JP RomaMemory”) to contribute to awareness-raising efforts to tackle discrimination and antigypsyism through broad visibility and recognition of the Roma Holocaust, as well as further inclusion of Roma Holocaust in media, school curricula and textbooks. Its members are the Council of Europe (Roma and Travellers Division, Observatory on History Teaching in Europe), the European Commission (DG Justice Unit D2 – Non-discrimination: Anti-racism and Roma coordination), the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA Permanent Office and Committee on the Genocide of the Roma), the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (CPRSI), the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC), ternYpe International Roma Youth Network (Dikh He Na Bister initiative) and the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma.

The thematic focus of the third coalition meeting was to review the progress and discuss future coalition interventions, including research, archives, and strategies to keep advancing education, remembrance and recognition of the Roma Holocaust.

Meeting outputs: the stakeholders improved their coordination and communication in terms of stand-alone initiatives related to Roma Holocaust remembrance and education, which have the potential to turn into joint actions for a better outreach. Members highlighted the added value of the Coalition, in particular to coordinate efforts and to create synergies; acknowledged the remaining challenges for recognition and awareness about Roma Holocaust; therefore, members expressed their commitment to continue the work in the coalition under the current JP RomaMemory and beyond.

Thanks to the guest participants Joanna Talewicz, President of the Board, Foundation Towards Dialogue, and Lovro Kraljrepresentative of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure, EHRI-ERIC, the Coalition members explored new cooperation opportunities with EHRI and the Polish Foundation Towards Dialogue for activities in 2026.

The next steps will be to invite Roma survivors to the coming Holocaust commemoration ceremonies on 27 January 2026, to organise the next Coalition meeting in April 2026, and to continue cooperating for the Roma Holocaust education, remembrance and recognition.
