ROMA DELEGATION TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE IN EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY: URGENT CALL TO ADDRESS ROMA SECURITY IN EUROPE

On International Human Rights Day, representatives of Roma political parties and civil society organizations from Belgium, Germany, Romania, Serbia and United Kingdom will convene in the European Parliament to present evidence of the deteriorating security situation of Roma people and to call for decisive EU action.

The press conference is organized under the framework of the Global Roma Alliance for Strategic Security (GRASS) and supported by the European Free Alliance (EFA). It follows recent bilateral exchanges with Commissioners Hadja Lahbib and Magnus Brunner and builds on the Commission’s 8 September 2025 acknowledgment of Roma security as a priority concern.

⚠️ Evidence of Deterioration of Security Situation of Roma:

– Bulgaria (May 2025): Local officials in Sofia proposed purchasing tickets to deport Roma citizens to Strasbourg in response of a decision of European Court on Human Rights urging Bulgaria to provide the evicted Roma families with alternative housing.

– Hungary (July 2025): Enforcement of the Law on the Protection of Local Identity legitimized exclusionary practices targeting Roma and other vulnerable groups, restricting their freedom of movement and choice of residence within the country.

– Czech Republic (November 2025): Election of Tomio Okamura as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies normalized anti‑Roma rhetoric at the highest constitutional level, directly beneath the president and prime minister.

– Slovakia (November 2025): A government‑supported and EU funded international security conference held in Košice – “Secure Slovakia and the European Union” – explicitly framed the Roma population as a “problem.”

– Slovenia (November 2025): Passage of the “Šutar Law” expanded police powers and created “security zones” overlapping with Roma settlements institutionalizing the collective securitization of Roma communities.

✊ The Roma Delegation calls for:

  • ✅ Recognizing Roma as people whose security requires protection, not as threats.
  • ✅ Formal communication channels with EU institutions.
  • ✅ Integration of Roma security into EU frameworks.
  • ✅ Safeguarding Roma identity, dignity, and cultural heritage.
  • ✅ Parliamentary engagement and political representation.
  • ✅ Dedicated EU funding for Roma resilience and legal protection.
