Romani language inextricably linked to identity, it is claimed

If language is the base then we are really in problems, because it is and should be our ancient Culture, Traditions and Practices, that make our identity, not predominately the language.

The talk about the language more often than not comes from the “experts” and certain activists who, themselves, have lost most if not indeed all connection to our ancient Culture. Hence their obsession with language (alone).

I could learn Russian, and probably become so proficient in it, as well by way of accents, that I could pass for a Russian, but that still does not make me a Russian by culture and whatever else.

Even if I would acquire much of the Russian ways and culture I would still not be a Russian. I would either be a wannabe, or simply a foreigner speaking Russian and trying to live Russian. Anyone can learn a language and become proficient in it to an extent that he can hardly be perceived as a foreigner but that still does not make the speaker a member of those people or ethnicity, because anyone can learn to speak Romanes as well, but that still will never make him Rom. It is not only blood but Culture and all that goes with is that makes us.

If I do not speak Romanes but am by blood of the People and know and follow Culture, Traditions and Practices I am Rom, regardless of the fact that I have lost the language or never been taught it; and there are many like that.

To put primary emphasis on the language not only exclude those that for many reasons do not have amari Chib but also gives those that may have the language but no knowledge of our ways and Culture a perceived right to speak for us; perceived by them not necessarily by us in the main.
