The Roma Political School will feature a series of workshops, seminars, and educational activities focused on the critical study of Roma communities inGreece and Europe. This initiative is designed to contribute to the growing academic field of Romani Studies, empower the Roma communities by manifesting the academic skills of its members, and to promote inclusive, participatory knowledge production.
The School will be implemented at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens, Greece.
Panteion University — one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions for social and political sciences in Greece— provides an ideal academic environment for the development of such a program. With a long tradition in fostering critical thought, public policy engagement, and democracy, Panteion is uniquely positioned to support this programme.
The Roma Political School will play a key role in:
- Advancing interdisciplinary research on the histories, politics, and lived experiences of Roma communities.
- Critically analyzing state and EU-level policies regarding Roma inclusion, citizenship, and human rights.
- Challenging antigypsyism and structural discrimination through academic inquiry and public discourse.
Importantly, the programme will also create a dedicated platform for emerging scholars of Roma origin, giving them the opportunity to present their academic work, engage in scholarly debate, and contribute to shaping the future of Romani Studies.
Through a combination of lectures, participatory seminars, student mentorship, and public roundtables, the Roma Political School aims not only to produce knowledge but to empower a new generation of Roma intellectuals and public voices in Greece and beyond.
The Objectives of the programme is:
- To explore the emergence of Romani Studies as a critical academic discipline and its role in fostering inclusive knowledge and social justice. Particular attention will be given to relevant literature, with an emphasis on Greek-language publications.
- To promote knowledge and academic approach of Roma issues in Greece and Europe
- To enable students of social and political sciences to approach the field of Romani studies and study concrete issues about the Roma in Greece
- To promote discussions within the academia about the importance of studying about the Roma
- To promote informative decision-making
- To offer a platform for young Roma graduates to present their academic work and Master’s theses, highlighting new voices in the field.
The Roma Political School will be comprised of three phases:
Phase 1: A two-day workshop (6 November, 15:00-20:00)
Phase 2: Short Seminar Series (13, 20, 27 November, 17:00-19:00)
Phase 3: Final Symposium (11 December, 15:00-19:00)
