Introduction
The World Roma Congress convened in Berlin from 15 to 17 May 2023, bringing together participants
from 30 countries worldwide. The Congress served as a platform to address pressing challenges faced by
Roma communities globally, focusing on issues such as discrimination, the situation of Roma refugees,
and the rise of right-wing extremism. With thousands of viewers tuning in online, the discussions
highlighted the urgency of the current situation and emphasized the need for collective action. The
Congress concluded with the adoption of a declaration outlining the demands and aspirations of the
Roma nation.
An Urgent Situation
Discrimination, racism, and anti-Roma sentiment continue to rise across the globe, presenting a grave
concern for Roma communities. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine poses a significant threat not only to
Roma within Ukraine but also to those residing in neighboring countries. The Roma in these regions face
limited state protection and endure high levels of structural and institutional discrimination.
