We invite you to the launch of a groundbreaking book:
The Permanence of Anti-Roma Racism: (Un)uttered Sentences (2025) by Margareta Matache
Friday, 20 February
18:00 (CET)
Live streaming on YouTube & Facebook
Event held in English
This event marks a significant historical moment: 170 years since the abolition of Romani slavery in the Romanian principalities — a foundational yet often silenced chapter in European history, centrally addressed in Dr. Matache’s work.
Bringing together leading voices in Romani studies, policy, and human rights, this conversation will examine the historical and structural nature of anti-Roma racism, the politics of silence, and the urgent need for accountability and transformative justice.
Speakers
Dr. Margareta (Magda) Matache – Author
Lecturer at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-founder of the Roma Program at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. Member of the Lancet Commission on Racism, Structural Discrimination and Global Health. With over 25 years of experience in advocacy, leadership, and academic research on structural racism.
Dr. Ismael Cortés – Discussant
Postdoctoral Fellow at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism (Heidelberg University), Associate Professor at Universitat Jaume I, and Board Member of ERIAC. Former Member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies (2019–2023). A key figure in advancing legal and policy recognition of antigypsyism in Spain and Europe.
Sebijan Fejzula – Discussant
Researcher and anti-racist militant. PhD candidate in Human Rights at the University of Coimbra and co-founder of Kale Amenge (Roma for Ourselves). Her work critically engages with state racism, Romani political autonomy, and intersectional liberation.
Maria Dumitru – Moderator
Co-founder of CHANIPEN and social scientist specialising in anti-Roma racism, Roma feminism, and the gendered dimensions of enslavement. PhD candidate at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion, and Society.
Anti-Roma racism is not a marginal issue nor a temporary phenomenon. It is deeply embedded in European history, governance structures, and social institutions. This event will critically explore how racism persists, how it is reproduced, and what structural transformation truly requires.
Join us live and become part of the dialogue on memory, justice, and systemic change.
