The Roma Diplomacy Network proudly joined forces with Roma Center e. V., Roma Antidiscrimination Network, the Sinti Roma Holocaust Memorial Trust, the Union of Roma in Serbia, Partida Romilor ”Pro Europa”, and ”With Wings and Roots”. In just two days (9–10 December), Roma political parties from Romania and Serbia, together with civil organizations from the UK, Germany, and Belgium, delivered groundbreaking results:
Joint Position Paper on Roma Strategic Dialogue with the EU Commission & Parliament:
- – Exposed growing institutional and structural anti‑Gypsyism across Europe.
- – Called for stronger monitoring of EU/national security policies to stop securitization and criminalization of entire Roma communities.
- – Demanded Roma security be mainstreamed as a priority in EU strategies and programs, with dedicated funding for protection of Roma in the same way as the Jewish and Muslim communities.
- – Urged Roma political representation in both EU and national parliaments and inclusion of Roma political parties alongside NGOs in EU policy debates.
Key Meetings with:
- – Ms Lorena López de Lacalle Arizti, President of the EFA party
- – Ms Mari Hämäläinen, Cabinet member of Commissioner Magnus Brunner
- – MEP Diana Riba i Giner, Greens/European Free Alliance
- – MEP Loránt Vincze, European People’s Party, Chair of Minority Intergroup and FUEN
- – Staff of MEP Saskia Bricmont, Greens/European Free Alliance
- – Staff of MEP Vicent Marzà i Ibáñez, Greens/European Free Alliance
- – Mr Jaroslav Kling, Research Officer on Roma Inclusion, Fundamental Rights Agency
The First Roma Press Conference held in the European Parliament in Brussels on 10 December, International Human Rights Day, addressing the urgent issue of Roma security.
Breakthrough Amendment: MEP Diana Riba i Giner from Spain introduced collective Roma security into the EU’s 2025 Rule of Law draft report – the first time ever in an official European Parliament document!
Thanks to the good collaboration between GRASS and the European Free Alliance, EFA has become the first European political party prepared to welcome Roma political parties as members. The Union of Roma in Serbia (Unija Roma Srbije) is the first to apply – marking a decisive step away from token individualism toward genuine community representation.
The Roma Delegation made it clear: it’s time to move from passive reliance on human rights frameworks to proactive political and security strategies. From individual human rights back to the collective spirit of the Romani movement.
All of this was achieved without donor funding and without projects, because the emergency situation with Roma security in Europe requires urgent Roma self‑organization and self‑empowerment.
This is clear proof: the Romani people is not weak. The Romani people is not powerless. For decades, millions of Roma have been taught to see themselves as a powerless “vulnerable group”, so that others could exploit this imposed vulnerability. The results are catastrophic: exclusion from decision‑making, distorted representation, and growing securitization.
It’s time to break that narrative. It’s time to build new partnerships and reclaim our strength, our unity, and our collective future.
